Units and Measurements

1A definition is a test you can run
A unit is a test you can run: a named standard you can compare a length, time, or mass against. SI metres, seconds, kilograms are the school standards. “About this long” with no standard is not a measurement.
A hand-span as if it were an SI metre is a miss.
Figure. A quantity is a test: name what is measured, write its SI unit, and only then write a relation among those named quantities.

2Name the given before the unknown
The given is the raw reading and its unit. The unknown is a converted size or a dimension-check. Copy “cm” before you treat it as metres.
Using 12 as 12 m when the stick said 12 cm is a silent given.
Figure. Write the given mass and acceleration with SI units before asking for force. The unknown sits after the named givens.

3One worked case is enough at this class
One conversion or one dimension-check is enough. A page of the same 12 cm → 0.12 m clone does not add a new SI base.
Ten twins of 1 km = 1000 m are still one idea.
Figure. One worked SI case is enough here: 2 kg times 3 m/s2 is 6 N. The unit of the product is the unit of force.

4A miss: swapping the school name for the picture
A ruler-photo is a setting. The science is a named SI unit. Marks are not metres until you say the standard.
A phone-screen still is not a kilogram.

- Keep the photo as a storyA setting.

5Check by the opposite action or the opposite test
Check a conversion by multiplying back; check a formula’s honesty by matching dimensions on both sides. 0.12 m × 100 must return 12 cm.
A pretty formula whose left is a time and right is a length fails the opposite test.
Figure. The opposite test for a force formula is a dimension check: [F] must be [M][L][T-2], the same as kg m/s2.

6Keep the claim at this chapter, not the next
This chapter’s claim stops at units, standards, and honest dimensions. It does not steal one-d kinematic equations, and it does not start a plane-vector dump.
A page that already “solves v = u+at” here misses the motion chapter.

7The story is the hook; the test is the idea
A race-story is the hook (who ran farther). The test is still “same unit before you compare 12 and 0.12”. A story with no unit is a poster.
Cheering “faster” with one time in s and one in min unconverted is the miss.
Figure. A rolling-cart sentence is only the hook. The idea is the SI test: name force in newton after mass and acceleration are named.

8Units or labels must match before you compare
Units or labels must match before you compare: 12 cm versus 0.20 m is 0.12 m versus 0.20 m, not 12 versus 0.20. A dimension label (m, s, kg) is part of the number. Adding 3 m to 2 s is not a compare.
Dropping “cm” because the digits looked bigger is a lying compare.
Figure. Do not compare 2 with 2000. Convert 2000 g to 2 kg, then the two masses match and may be compared.
