Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter

Official NCERT chapter from Physics Part I–II (book code leph1). ExamMaster notes are original teaching at CBSE Class 12 depth.

This lesson follows the official chapter “Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter” in Physics Part I–II. The words below are ExamMaster’s teaching, not a paste from the book. Use the NCERT chapter for the classroom sequence; use these notes to hold the idea without copying exercises or figures.

1Electron Emission

Electron emission: electrons leave a metal when given enough energy as taught — heat (thermionic), light (photo), or a field if named. Emission is a leave-look, not a current-in-a-wire dump.

A bound electron as “already emitted” is a miss.

Figure. Three ways an electron leaves a metal: heat (thermionic), a photon that clears the work function (photoelectric), or a strong electric field. The plate is one surface. The arrows name the cause, not a scale of force.

How it works

  1. Name heat, light, or field as the leave-cueEmission.
  2. Keep a metal as the school sourceThe case.
  3. Refuse a wire-current as this headingA leave.

2Photoelectric Effect

Photoelectric effect: light on a metal can free electrons as taught. A threshold frequency sits; below it, no emission even if bright. Photoelectric is a light-to-electron look, not a heat-glow.

A red below-threshold as “just wait longer” is the leftover Einstein will refuse.

Figure. Photoelectric setup as a school photocell: lamp, cathode that emits, anode that collects, and a voltage you can reverse. Electrons that cannot climb the retarding hill never join the current. No glass-tube outline is drawn.

How it works

  1. Name light-on-metal and a leaveThe effect.
  2. Keep a threshold as the gateThe extra.
  3. Refuse brightness as a substitute for frequencyThe caution.

3Experimental Study of Photoelectric Effect

Experimental study: stopping potential, intensity, frequency as taught — KEmax from e Vs; intensity raises number, not KEmax (above threshold). The study is a graph-bundle, not a biography.

Intensity raising KEmax as the first claim is the wave-leftover.

Figure. Photocurrent against collector voltage for one metal and one frequency. Both traces die at the same stopping potential −V0 = −1.2 V, so K_max did not move. Doubling intensity only lifts the saturation plateau (I0 to 2 I0). Zero voltage is the vertical rule, not the left frame.

How it works

  1. Name Vs, intensity, frequency as the knobsThe study.
  2. Read KEmax from e VsThe energy.
  3. Keep intensity as a number-of-electrons lookThe split.

4Photoelectric Effect and Wave Theory of Light

Wave theory fails: a wave should share energy and eventually free electrons below threshold as framed — it does not. Wave-talk cannot hold the instant leave and the frequency-gate. Failure is a why-we-need-quanta.

Calling the wave picture “fine if we wait” is the leftover.

Figure. A wave would store more energy in a brighter beam, so electrons should leave faster. The photocell shows the opposite split: brightness changes how many electrons leave, and frequency alone changes how fast. That split is why the wave story fails this chapter.

How it works

  1. Name the leftover the wave could not holdThreshold or instant.
  2. Say a quantum picture is neededThe push.
  3. Keep it a failure-sentenceNot a new formula yet.

5Einstein’s Photoelectric Equation: Energy Quantum of Radiation

Einstein’s equation: hν = φ + KEmax as taught. A photon’s energy pays the work function, leftover is KE. Einstein is a packet-account, not a wave-average.

Using ½ mv^2 = hν with no φ is a miss.

Figure. Einstein’s line: K_max = hν − φ. Both metals share slope h = 4.14×10⁻¹⁵ eV s. Raising φ from 2.25 eV to 4.50 eV slides the intercept from ν0 to ν0′ and does not tilt the line. Below threshold the axis is empty — there is no emission to plot.

How it works

  1. Copy ν and φThe given.
  2. Form hν − φ as KEmaxThe equation.
  3. Keep a below-threshold as no leaveThe gate.

KE leftover

hν=4 eV, φ=2 eV. Find KEmax.

  • hν − φ2 eV
  • KEmax2 eV
  • Readleftover after the work function

Pro tip. Packet minus the leave-price.

6Particle Nature of Light: The Photon

The photon: a quantum of light as taught, E=hν, p=h/λ. Photon is a packet, not a tiny ball you can oil. Particle-nature of light is this packet-talk.

A water-ripple as the whole photon is a miss.

Figure. A photon is one packet. It arrives whole, spends the work function getting one electron out, and the leftover is K_max. Two dim photons cannot club together to pay φ. E = hν and p = h/λ are the same packet read as energy and as momentum.

How it works

  1. Name E=hν (and p if asked)The photon.
  2. Keep it a packet of lightThe nature.
  3. Refuse a oil-ball pictureA quantum.

7Wave Nature of Matter

Wave nature of matter: de Broglie λ = h/p as taught. An electron can diffract. Matter-wave is a moving-particle wavelength, not a sound. One λ=h/p is enough.

A rest mass as a leftover λ without p is a miss — p=0 blows the write.

Figure. De Broglie for an electron from rest through V volts is λ(Å) = 12.27/√V. The eight points are that formula on 16 V to 196 V, so λ falls as 1/√V and does not meet the origin — at V = 0 the wavelength is not a finite point. At 100 V the mark is 1.23 Å, a crystal-spacing size.

How it works

  1. Copy p (or mv)The given.
  2. Form h/pde Broglie.
  3. Keep a diffraction-look as the evidence if taughtHonest extra.

8A definition is a test you can run

Dual-word is a test: emission, photoelectric, Einstein, photon, or de Broglie. If you only say “both”, you have a heading.

A yin-yang sticker is not the test.

Figure. The definition of threshold frequency is a test you can run: hold the metal fixed and change only ν. Below ν0, wait as long as you like — no electron leaves. Above ν0, emission starts at once. Intensity is not the test.

How it works

  1. Name the effect or the packet or λ=h/pThe object.
  2. Give the school sentenceThe test.
  3. Then the word has contentThe definition ran.
hν = φ + KEmax is
  1. Einstein’s photoelectric write
  2. Ohm’s law
  3. Snell

Packet-account.
