Numbers, Time and Money

Saying clock time, dates, rupees, phone numbers and large figures clearly in conversation.

Numbers said aloud follow their own conventions, separate from grammar, and a speaker who reads them digit by digit or in the Indian numbering system without converting it loses an international listener even when every word is correct English. Six concepts cover the numbers that come up daily in a spoken exchange: clock time, dates and years, money in rupees, phone numbers, the lakh/crore-to-million/billion conversion, and fractions and percentages.

1Half past, quarter to, and 24-hour office style

Digital time gets read digit by digit far too often in Indian English speech — four colon three zero PM — where a native speaker converts it into a phrase: half past four or four thirty. Quarter past and quarter to work the same way: 4:15 is quarter past four or four fifteen; 4:45 is quarter to five, counting toward the next hour rather than past the last one.

Twelve o'clock needs its own words rather than a number at all: noon for midday, midnight for the night hour, both clearer than 12 PM or 12 AM, which even native speakers sometimes mix up.

Twenty-four-hour reading (fourteen hundred hours) belongs to military and aviation registers, not ordinary office speech; an office call says two PM, not fourteen hours, even though the written invite may show 14:00.

A written invite shows the call at 16:45. How do you say that aloud in an ordinary office call?
  1. Sixteen forty-five.
  2. Quarter to five in the evening.
  3. Four colon four five PM.
  4. Sixteen hundred forty-five hours.

Quarter to five (in the evening, or PM) is how an ordinary office call says this time. Sixteen forty-five and sixteen hundred forty-five hours are military/aviation registers a colleague would find odd on a normal call; four colon four five reads the digits rather than converting them.

2Dates and years: saying 15/08/1947 and 2025 out loud

Written dates in India go day/month/year (15/08/1947), while the US writes month/day/year (08/15/1947) — the same digits, two different meanings, which is exactly why a spoken date should never be read as raw numbers. Say it in words instead: the fifteenth of August, nineteen forty-seven, or the American order, August the fifteenth, nineteen forty-seven.

Years split into pairs rather than being read as four separate digits: nineteen forty-seven, not one nine four seven. The 2000s take a slightly different pattern — 2005 is two thousand five or twenty oh-five, and 2025 is twenty twenty-five, following the same pair-split once the year is safely past 2009.

In a written date to an international contact, spelling the month out (15 August 2025) removes the day/month ambiguity entirely, which matters more for scheduling than getting the spoken form pretty.

You're scheduling a call with a US client for 03/11. To avoid the day/month mix-up, what should you say?
  1. Zero three eleven.
  2. The third of November — spelling the month removes the confusion.
  3. Three-eleven, our usual format.
  4. March eleven, obviously.

Naming the month avoids the exact ambiguity that 03/11 creates between the US (March 11) and Indian (3 November) reading. Reading the digits or assuming your own country's format is what causes the missed meeting in the first place.

3Two thousand five hundred rupees: saying money without the only calque

Cheques and legal documents append only after an amount — rupees two thousand five hundred only — to block a forger from adding digits, and Indian speech carried that habit into ordinary conversation, where two thousand five hundred rupees only sounds native only to another Indian ear.

Spoken money in natural English drops only entirely and puts the amount before the currency word: two thousand five hundred rupees, not rupees two thousand five hundred (the reversed order is also a translation habit, mirroring the mother tongue's word order).

Small amounts with paise or decimals read the way a decimal price does anywhere: ₹99.50 is ninety-nine rupees fifty, or colloquially ninety-nine fifty, the same pattern as ninety-nine dollars fifty in American speech.

You're telling a colleague the cost of a taxi ride in plain spoken English. Which is the natural form?
  1. Rupees three hundred only.
  2. Three hundred rupees.
  3. Only three hundred rupees I paid.
  4. Rupees three hundred, only.

Three hundred rupees puts the amount first and drops only, which is the natural spoken form outside cheque-writing register. The other options either keep the only calque or reverse the word order to currency-then-amount.

4Phone numbers: said in groups, not as one giant number

A ten-digit mobile number is never read as a single number — nobody says nine billion, eight hundred forty-eight million... — it is read digit by digit in small groups, commonly a five-and-five split: nine eight four eight zero, one two three four five.

Zero inside a phone number is usually said as zero in Indian English and often as oh in American speech (nine eight four, oh, one two three four); either is understood, but consistency within one reading is what sounds deliberate rather than uncertain.

Repeated digits sometimes get compressed — double two for 22 — which is common in British usage but safer avoided with an international or unfamiliar listener, where naming each digit separately (two two) is never misheard.

You're reading your mobile number aloud to a colleague over a call. Which is the natural approach?
  1. Say it as one large number: nine billion, eight hundred...
  2. Read it digit by digit in small groups.
  3. Spell each digit as a word compound: ninety-eight, four hundred eighty.
  4. Say only the first five digits and let them guess the rest.

Digit-by-digit in small groups is how every native speaker reads a phone number aloud; a phone number is never read as one large quantity, which is treating it like an amount rather than an identifier.

5Ten lakh, one crore: converting for an international audience

India counts in lakhs and crores; most of the world counts in thousands and millions, and the two systems do not share a name at any point above a thousand. One lakh is one hundred thousand (1,00,000); one crore is ten million (1,00,00,000) — and saying fifty lakh users to a US-based client communicates nothing until it is converted.

The conversion is fixed and worth memorising rather than calculating live: ten lakh is one million, one crore is ten million, ten crore is one hundred million, and one hundred crore is one billion. Fifty lakh becomes five million; two crore becomes twenty million.

Getting this right in a live call matters commercially as much as linguistically — a client who mishears fifty lakh as fifty thousand, for lack of a shared number word, is planning around a number a hundred times too small.

You need to tell a US-based investor your app has 2 crore registered users. Which is the correct international conversion?
  1. Two million users.
  2. Twenty million users.
  3. Two hundred million users.
  4. Twenty thousand users.

One crore is ten million, so two crore is twenty million. Two million and two hundred million are off by a factor of ten in opposite directions, and twenty thousand is off by a thousand-fold — exactly the kind of error an unconverted lakh/crore figure produces.

6Half, three-quarters, and 60%: numbers you say, not read as symbols

Fractions are said as words, never as read-out symbols: 1/2 is half or one half, 3/4 is three-quarters, 1/3 is a third or one-third — nobody says one over three aloud outside a maths classroom explaining the notation itself.

Percentages keep the number and add percent as a spoken word: 60% is sixty percent, and the percent sign is never read as its own word (percent-sign) or skipped as if the number alone implied it.

Decimals inside a percentage follow the same point convention as any other decimal: 12.5% is twelve point five percent, or the colloquial twelve and a half percent — both natural, unlike reading the decimal digit by digit (twelve point five zero).

You're telling a colleague that a survey found 12.5% of users affected. Which is the natural spoken form?
  1. Twelve point five zero percent.
  2. Twelve point five percent.
  3. Twelve percent point five.
  4. One two point five percent.

Twelve point five percent reads the decimal the way any decimal is read aloud, then adds percent once at the end. The other options either pad a trailing zero nobody says, misplace percent, or read the whole number digit by digit.
