1Favourite colours is one label at a time

One sort uses one label: red, blue, green, … A child is in one colour pile for this question.

A new question (“favourite animal”) needs a new sort.

2Complete the table from the picture

Count the honest marks in the picture. Write that count in the table row. Do not write a favourite number.

The table is the record of the picture, or they must be fixed together.

3The most liked colour is the biggest honest count

Most is the largest honest row. A tall pretty bar with doubled marks is not most.

Least is the smallest honest row.

How it works

  1. Trust only honest marksOne child, one mark.

4The least liked colour is the smallest honest count

Least is the other end of the same compare. Zero is allowed if that colour had no mark.

Do not hide a zero row. Empty is a count.

5Tally marks in fives

Four sticks and a fifth across is a bundle of 5. Tally is a faster record, not a new number.

A sixth stick starts a new bundle. Do not draw a star and call it 5.

6A pictograph with a key

If one picture means 2 children, the key must say so. Counting pictures as children then doubles the truth.

No key means one picture, one child — or the graph is not ready.

How it works

  1. Find the keyWhat one picture stands for.
  2. Multiply if the key says manyPictures \times key.

Pictures times the key: 5 \times 2 = 10.

7“How many more” subtracts two table rows

Red 8, blue 5: red is 3 more. That is 8 − 5, two honest rows.

“How many more” is not a join. Do not add the rows.

How it works

  1. Read the two rows8 and 5.
  2. Subtract the smaller8 − 5 = 3.
  3. Say “3 more”Not 13.

8A table and a picture must agree

If the table says 6 red, the picture must show 6 red marks (or 3 pictures when the key is 2). A mismatch means re-count.

Do not pick the prettier one as truth.

How it works

  1. Read the table6 red.
  2. Count the picture with the keyMarks or pictures \times key.
  3. Demand a matchOr re-count both.

Notes

  • The official chapter title is “Data Handling”. Teach the school test for that title, not a contest shortcut.
  • If a step needs a later class, stop. The next official chapter will pick it up.
