Fun at the Fair (Money)

1Mother gave 50 rupees — that is the purse

50 rupees is the starting value you hold. Rides spend part of it. The purse is a value, not “50 coins”.

Write the purse first. Then spend.

2Rides spend part of the purse

Each ride has a price. Paying it takes that value out of the purse. The story is take-away of values.

A ride you did not take does not spend.

  2. Take it from the purseNew purse = old − price.
  3. Refuse a free-air spendOnly rides you took.

3Add prices of tickets and snacks

Two tickets of 12 and a snack of 8 join to 32 rupees spent. Add values, not the count of papers.

Three papers can still be 32 rupees.

How it works

  1. Read each price12, 12, 8.
  2. Join the values32 rupees spent.
  3. Ignore how many slipsA different question.

Tickets and a snack

Two $12 tickets and one $8 snack. How much spent?

  • Tickets$12 + $12 = $24
  • Snack$8
  • Spent$32

Pro tip. Add values. Two tickets are not $2.

4Change is purse minus what was spent

Purse 50, spent 32, change 18. That leftover value is change, not a new kind of money.

If spent is more than the purse, you are short — that is not change.

How it works

  1. Name the purse50.
  2. Name the spent32.
  3. Take spent out50 − 32 = 18.

Purse $50. Spent $32. What remains?

Pro tip. Change is leftover value. Short is a different sentence.

5Compare two friends’ totals

Riya spent 32, Sahil spent 28. Riya spent more by 4. Compare two honest totals.

A guessed total cannot enter the compare.

How it works

  1. Trust both totalsEach added honestly.
  2. Subtract the smaller32 − 28 = 4.
  3. Name who spent moreRiya, by 4 rupees.

6A rate: cost of one ride, then many

If one ride is 8 rupees, three rides are 8 + 8 + 8 = 24. The one-price is the group size.

Do not invent a fourth ride. The story says how many.

How it works

  1. Lock the one-price8 rupees.
  2. Repeat for each rideEqual groups.
  3. Join3 × 8 = 24.

7Coins that match a note

A 10-rupee note matches two 5-rupee coins. Same value, different pieces.

The shop asks for value. The mix is your choice if the value matches.

How it works

  1. Fix the value10 rupees.
  2. Find one mixOne note, or two 5s.
  3. Call them the sameSame rupee.

8Rupees are a count of value, not of coins

Six rupees can be six 1s or a 5 and a 1. The shop wants 6 rupees. The pile size is not the ask.

Mixing “how many coins” with “how many rupees” is the miss.

Leftover value: 50 - 32 = 18.

Notes

  • The official chapter title is “Fun at the Fair (Money)”. Teach the school test for that title, not a contest shortcut.
  • If a step needs a later class, stop. The next official chapter will pick it up.

Formulas

  • Spent = sum of prices.
  • Remain = purse - spent.
  • Many rides = (one-price) \times (how many).
