Fun at Class Party!

1A class picture is a data pile
Balloons, plates, or children in a picture are things you can sort. The picture is a data pile, not a decoration only.
Admiring the photo is not a sort.

2Sort by one label: balloons, plates, children
One sort uses one label. Mixing balloons-and-plates into one pile hides both counts.
Change the label only when you start a new question.

3One object, one mark
A tally or a picture-mark stands for one object. Two marks for one balloon doubles the pile.
The mark is not the balloon; it is the record.

4The most is the tallest honest pile
Most means the largest count after an honest one-to-one. A taller drawing that used bigger pictures is a cheat.
Compare counts, not crayon size.

How it works

5A table and a picture must agree
If the table says 12 plates, the picture must show 12 plate-marks. A mismatch means one record is wrong.
Do not “fix” it by a story. Recount.
Figure. If the table says 4 plates, the picture must show 4 plate-marks. Three marks against a 4 is a mismatch — recount; do not invent a story that “fixes” it.

6“How many more” subtracts two counts
How many more balloons than plates is (balloon count) − (plate count), after both counts are finished.
It is not a new sort.

How it works

- Subtract the smaller from the largerIf the question is “more”.

How many more cups
A table shows 18 cups and 11 plates. How many more cups than plates?

Pro tip. How many more subtracts two finished counts.
7A party cost is a running total of rupees
Hats $12 and juice $25 is a running total of values, not a count of 2 items.
Write $ after you add values.
Figure. A party cost adds values, not item counts. Hats Rs 12 and juice Rs 25 make Rs 37 — two items would be the wrong total.

8A new question needs a new sort
“How many red balloons?” is a new label. Reusing the all-balloons pile without splitting colour is the wrong pile.
New question, new sort.

How it works
- Hear the new labelRed, or plates, or children.
- Sort againOnly that label.
- Then countThat answers the new question.
The table says 12 plates but the pictograph shows 9 marks. You should

- Believe the prettier picture
- Add 12 and 9
A table and a picture must agree.
Notes
- The official chapter title is “Fun at Class Party!”. Teach the school test for that title, not a contest shortcut.
- If a step needs a later class, stop. The next official chapter will pick it up.
Formulas
- How many more = larger count - smaller count.
- Party cost = sum of rupee values, not the count of items.
