House of Hundreds – II

1Crows in a garden are a count too big for ones only

A garden flock is still ones, but writing two hundred ones is painful. Houses of tens and hundreds store the same count.

“Lots of crows” is not a house-read.

2Hundreds house again, now with a prize-story

A prize of 100 or 200 is a hundreds-house number. The prize story does not move the digit into ones.

Read 100 as 1 hundred, 0 tens, 0 ones.

3An estimate can sit next to an exact count

“About 200 crows” can sit beside an exact 186. The estimate is a neighbour; the exact is the finished bundles.

Do not erase the exact because the estimate is rounder.

4Add hundreds without mixing them into tens

200 + 300 is 5 hundreds = 500. You add the hundreds digits. You do not pour them into the tens house.

2 + 3 = 5 is true in that house only because both are hundreds.

Figure. 200 + 300 is 2 hundreds plus 3 hundreds. Write 5 in the hundreds house: 500. Do not pour those digits into the tens house and write 50 or 5.

A morning count is 200. Afternoon adds 300 more. What is the total?

Pro tip. Add hundreds in the hundreds house. 5 means 500, not 5 ones.

5Compare two large counts from the left

520 and 480: hundreds 5 > 4, so 520 is more. The prize-story does not change that.

Ones-first still lies when hundreds differ.

6A number line jump of 100 is one house

From 240 to 340 is one hundred-jump. That jump is +100, one step of the hundreds house.

A jump of 10 is a tens-house step, not a hundred.

7Zero still holds a house open

304 is 3 hundreds, 0 tens, 4 ones. The joke or prize does not let you drop the zero.

34 is a different number.

  1. Read each houseIncluding the empty one.

A court joke can be the picture. The count is still hundreds, tens, ones.

Laugh, then read the houses. Do not let the joke replace the numeral.

Notes

  • The official chapter title is “House of Hundreds – II”. Teach the school test for that title, not a contest shortcut.
  • If a step needs a later class, stop. The next official chapter will pick it up.

Formulas

  • 200 + 300 = 500 (add hundreds in the hundreds house).
  • A jump of 100 changes only the hundreds digit when tens and ones stay.
