The Surajkund Fair

1A fair stall has prices in rupees

A tag that says $40 is a value, not a count of four toys. Read rupees first.

A stall name is the setting. The price is the number you compute with.

  1. Find the tagA rupee amount.
  2. Read it as valueNot as “how many items”.
  3. Write $ with the numberSo it stays a value.

2Add values, not the count of coins

A $10 note and a $5 coin make $15, not 2. Values add; objects-as-count is a different question.

Two coins can be less money than one note.

How it works

  1. List each valuePrint on the note or coin.
  2. Add those printsRupees + rupees.
  3. Ignore “how many pieces” unless askedPiece-count is another pile.

3A purse minus a spend is the change

Purse $50, spend $32, change $18. Change is what remains, not a new stall.

If the purse is smaller than the spend, you are short — that is not change.

How it works

  1. Write the purseStart value.
  2. Write the spendWhat left.
  3. Subtract if purse is enoughThat remainder is change.

Change at a stall

A purse holds $80. A kite costs $45. What change is due?

  • Change$80 − $45 = $35

Pro tip. Change is purse minus spend when the purse is enough.

4Compare two stalls’ totals

Stall A $70 and stall B $55: A costs more. Compare values, not how many things sit on the cloth.

A stall with more toys can still cost less.

How it works

  1. Total each stallSum of its tags.
  2. Compare those totalsMore, less, or the same.
  3. Do not count objects insteadValue, not pile-size.

5A rate: cost of one, then many

If one bangle is $12, three bangles are $36 if the rate stays. Multiply or add the same value three times.

A bargain that changes the rate needs a new tag. Do not keep $12 if the tag changed.

Figure. If one bangle is Rs 12 and the rate stays, three bangles are three copies of that value: 12 + 12 + 12 = 36.

How it works

  1. Read the one-price$12 each.
  2. Count how many3.
  3. Repeat the value that many times3 × 12 = 36.

6Notes and coins are the same rupee

A $10 note and two $5 coins are the same value as one another. Paper or metal does not change the rupee.

“Notes are more money” is false if the prints differ.

  1. Read each printThe number.

7Enough, short, or change due

Purse against spend: enough with change, exactly enough, or short. Those are three compare-words.

Do not say “change” when you are short.

  1. Compare purse and spendWhich is larger?

8The Haryana fair is the story; the arithmetic is the value count

Surajkund is the picture. Plus, minus, and compare of rupees are ordinary value-arithmetic.

Do not invent a fair-only plus.

A $10 note plus a $5 coin is

Add prints. Piece-count is a different question.

Notes

  • The official chapter title is “The Surajkund Fair”. Teach the school test for that title, not a contest shortcut.
  • If a step needs a later class, stop. The next official chapter will pick it up.

Formulas

  • Value of a pile = sum of the prints.
  • Change = purse - spend (only if purse \ge spend).
  • Many at the same rate = (one-price) \times (how many).
