1A long trip is a distance you can count

A trip is a length only after you name the unit and finish the count of those units. “Far” without a unit is a feeling.

A vehicle photo is the story, not the distance.

How it works

  1. Name the stretchHome to the next town.
  2. Name the unitKilometres, or a counted marker.
  3. Count to the endThat number is the trip.

2Ten thousand is a new house: TTh

Ten thousands open the TTh house, left of thousands. 10,000 is 1 in TTh and zeros in Th, H, T, O.

Writing 10000 without houses is a digit-string, not a read.

How it works

  1. See ten thousands10 × 1000.
  2. Open TThThe new left house.
  3. Write 1,0,0,0,0 in the five houses10,000.

3Ten thousands make ten thousand

Ten groups of one thousand make one ten-thousand. That is the trade into TTh.

Nine thousands are not yet 10,000.

How it works

  1. Make ten thousandsEach is 1,000.
  2. Trade for 1 TThNew house.
  3. Leave leftover thousands in ThNot a fake TTh.

4Reading a number with the TTh house

24,306 is 2 TTh, 4 Th, 3 H, 0 T, 6 O. Read left to right. The comma is a reading mark.

The 2 is not 2 ones.

How it works

  1. TTh2 → 20,000.
  2. Th and H4,000 and 300.
  3. T and O0 tens, 6 ones.

Read 18,070 by houses

Write 18,070 as TTh, Th, H, T, O.

Pro tip. Zero holds the hundreds and ones houses open.

5Writing large numbers with the houses in order

Write TTh, then Th, then H, T, O. Dropping a house slides every digit.

18,070 without the hundreds zero becomes 1,807 — a different trip-count.

6Adding a thousand keeps the next-house pattern

12,400 + 1,000 = 13,400. You add in the thousands house. TTh waits unless thousands pass nine.

Adding 1,000 into ones is a house-slide.

  1. Line up thousandsSame house.

7Compare two large numbers from the left

24,100 and 18,999: TTh 2 > 1, so 24,100 is more. Ones can wait.

Comparing ones first lies when TTh differs.

  1. Compare TThStop if they differ.
  2. Then Th, then HNext houses.
  3. Then T and OLast.

8A vehicle count is the story; the houses are the maths

Buses and cars are the picture. TTh through ones are the read.

Do not invent a travel-only plus.

Notes

  • The official chapter title is “We the Travellers — I”. Teach the school test for that title, not a contest shortcut.
  • If a step needs a later class, stop. The next official chapter will pick it up.

Formulas

  • 10000 = 10 thousands.
  • 24306 = 2\times 10000 + 4\times 1000 + 3\times 100 + 6.
