Weight and Capacity

1Check whether a recorded weight is sensible

A fridge is not 50 g. A packet of tea might be. Sense-check the number against the object before you trust the record.

A pretty label does not make 50 g a fridge.

Figure. A recorded weight has to live on a sensible scale. A grape is grams; a school bag is kilograms; a fridge is tens of kilograms. The log ladder is honest because grams to 50 kg spans decades.

2Read a scale from zero

The 0-mark sits at empty. A pointer at 1.5 kg is 1.5 kg only if zero was empty. Starting mid-scale needs a subtract.

A needle you do not line up is a guess.

3Kilograms and grams can name the same mass

1 kg 250 g = 1250 g. Same mass, new writing.

1 kg is not 1 g.

4A double number line matches kilograms and grams

1 kg lines up with 1000 g. 2 kg with 2000 g. That pairing is the convert.

A single unmarked line is mute.

5Capacity is a fill-test in litres

How much a bottle holds is litres or millilitres. That is not a lift-test.

A tall bottle can hold less than a short wide jug.

6A number without a unit is mute

“2” might be 2 kg or 2 L. Speak the unit.

Mute numbers cannot be sensible-checked.

7Estimate, then weigh or pour

Guess “about 2 kg” or “about 1 L”, then use the instrument.

A guess you will not check is not this estimate.

Sensible weight

A notebook is recorded as 4 kg. A brick is recorded as 40 g. Which record fails a sense-check?

Pro tip. Sense-check the object against everyday lift before you trust the record.

8A fridge is not fifty grams

Fifty grams is a small packet. A fridge is tens of kilograms. That mismatch is the sense-test failing.

Do not “believe the label” against the object.

Notes

  • The official chapter title is “Weight and Capacity”. Teach the school test for that title, not a contest shortcut.
  • If a step needs a later class, stop. The next official chapter will pick it up.
