Patterns in Life: Diversity and Classification

1India as a Biodiversity Hotspot
India as a biodiversity hotspot here means many kinds of living things in named places the lesson pointed to — a richness-word with a map, not a slogan. Hotspot is “many kinds here”, not “only India has life”. One named forest, reef, or Western-Ghats-story as taught is enough.
A flag-sticker is not the richness-test.
Figure. A hotspot is a place that holds many kinds. Forest is drawn longest, desert shortest. The bars are a comparison of kinds, not a government census.
How it works

2How to Classify Organisms?
Classify means sort by shared features you can name: cells or not as a first cut if taught, then plant-like / animal-like / other as the lesson’s questions. How-to is a question-chain, not a pile of Latin. One unknown leaf-versus-insect is enough.
Sorting by “cute” is not classify.
Figure. Classification is a test you run, not a nickname. First ask whether a nucleus is present. No sends you to Monera; yes sends you on to plant or animal.
How it works

3The Need for Classification
Need for classification: so two people can talk about the same living thing without a long pointing-story, and so related kinds sit near each other as taught. Need is a use-column (talk, group), not a reason to invent extra kingdoms today.
A stamp-collection hobby without a shared name is the problem the need solves.
Figure. Without ranks, the same kinds sit in a jumble. Classification piles like with like so a new organism has a shelf, not a new pile every time.

4Five Kingdom Classification
Five-kingdom is the school set of big drawers the lesson named (and the idea that “plant versus animal only” was too tight). Kingdom is a top drawer, not a species. Keep the five names the book used; do not invent a sixth.
A “my favourite animals” list is not a kingdom.
Figure. Five kingdoms is a partition of living things: Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia. An organism belongs in one shelf, not in two.
How it works

5Scientific Naming — The Binomial System
Binomial naming is two words: a genus-name plus a species-name, as taught, written in the school style (first word a bigger group, second word the kind). Scientific means that pair, not a nickname. Homo sapiens as a taught example if the lesson used it — still a pair, not a story.
A single nickname is not binomial.
Figure. A scientific name has two words: the genus, then the species. Homo sapiens is one such pair. A single local nickname is not the binomial.
How it works
- Write two words as the lesson showedThe pair.

6A definition is a test you can run
Diversity / classify / binomial is a test: many kinds in a place, a question-chain, or a two-word name. If you only say “nature”, you have a heading.
A green postcard is not the test.

How it works
- Name place-richness, a drawer, or a two-word nameThe object.

7Name the given before the unknown
The given is the living thing or the place asked. The unknown is the drawer or the pair-name. Copy a taught feature before you jump to a rainforest you cannot point to.
A documentary still is not your school garden.
Figure. Name the traits you were given — nucleus present, makes food — before you write the kingdom. Plantae is the name those two givens force, not a guess.
How it works

8One worked case is enough at this class
One sort or one two-word name is enough. A page of the same leaf-clone does not add a new hotspot.
Ten twins of “India is rich” are still a slogan if no place is named.
Figure. One organism is enough to walk the ranks: kingdom, then phylum, then class, then order. Each step nests inside the one before. Do not skip a shelf.
