Demat, Trading Account and KYC
How demat and trading accounts work, and why KYC is non-negotiable.
Seven concepts. Demat holds securities; trading account places orders; KYC identifies you. Mixing these up causes avoidable funding and transfer mistakes.

1Demat account
A demat account holds your securities in electronic form with a depository participant linked to NSDL or CDSL.
Think of it as the locker for shares and many other securities — not the cash wallet.
Figure. The locker holds securities as electronic credits; cash stays in the banking lane.
| Demat | Holds |
|---|---|
| Shares / securities | Electronic credits |
| Cash for trading | Usually in bank / trading settlement flow — not "inside" demat as cash |
| Proof of holding | Statements and app holdings views |
A demat account is primarily for
- Holding securities electronically
- Replacing the RBI as currency issuer
- Setting the Nifty level
Demat holds securities.
2Trading account
A trading account with a broker is what you use to place buy and sell orders on the exchange.
In practice, broker apps link trading, demat, and bank funding, but the roles remain distinct.

| Account | Job |
|---|---|
| Trading | Place orders |
| Demat | Hold securities |
| Bank | Fund and receive cash |
Placing an NSE market order is done through your
- Trading account / broker interface
- Demat locker without any broker
- Index vendor portal
Orders go through the trading/broker interface.
3KYC
Know Your Customer (KYC) processes identify you for intermediaries under AML and market rules. Incomplete KYC blocks account opening or transactions.
Provide accurate PAN, ID, and bank details; mismatches delay payouts and IPO applications.
Figure. KYC is the gate: accurate details open it; mismatches stall payouts and IPO applications.
| KYC piece | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Identity / PAN | Links you to tax and market records |
| Bank details | Correct payouts and funding |
| Accuracy | Avoid frozen or rejected transactions |
KYC in investing exists primarily to
- Identify customers for regulated intermediaries
- Guarantee portfolio returns
- Let tipsters skip registration
KYC is identity compliance, not a return promise.
4Bank linkage and funding
You fund purchases from a linked bank account and receive sale proceeds into bank settlement flows per the broker's process.
Never "fund" a trading account by paying a personal UPI ID that is not the broker's official collection method.
Figure. Two paths out of the same bank account - only the official rail ends inside your protected trading balance.
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Use official broker funding rails | Pay random personal UPIs for "tips" |
| Verify beneficiary names | Ignore mismatched account names |
| Keep payment proofs | Delete transfer SMS "to save space" |
Funding a broker account should use
- Official broker-linked payment methods
- A tipster's personal UPI for "VIP access"
- Cash handed to a stranger at a café
Official rails only.
5Contract notes and records
After trades, brokers issue contract notes — official records of what you traded, prices, and charges.
Download and keep them; they matter for taxes, disputes, and your own audit trail.
Figure. One document, three jobs: taxes, disputes, and your own records - download and keep it.
| Record | Use |
|---|---|
| Contract note | Evidence of trades and charges |
| Holdings statement | What sits in demat |
| P&L export | Personal tracking — still verify against notes |
Contract notes are important because they
- Document trades and charges for records, tax, and disputes
- Replace the need for a demat account
- Set the Sensex formula
Keep contract notes.
6Authorisations with care
Brokers may seek limited authorisations (such as for pay-in of securities) under regulated forms. Understand what you sign; unlimited vague authority is a red flag.
Prefer clear, purpose-limited mandates and revoke unused access when you leave a broker.
Figure. The reading matters more than the signing: narrow mandates pass; blanket authority is the red flag.
| Habit | Why |
|---|---|
| Read mandates | Know what the broker can move |
| Purpose-limited | Prefer narrow authorisations |
| On exit | Close/revoke cleanly |
When a broker asks for securities pay-in authorisation, you should
- Read the scope and prefer purpose-limited mandates
- Sign blank authority without reading
- Share your OTP with a tipster "helper"
Read and limit authorisations.
7Nomination
Nomination on demat (and folios) helps transmission if something happens to you. Keeping nominees updated is basic household financial hygiene.
Nomination is not estate planning by itself, but leaving it blank creates avoidable pain for families.
Figure. Same account, two futures for your family - nomination is the five-minute branch.
| Action | Benefit |
|---|---|
| Add nominee | Smoother transmission path |
| Update on life events | Marriage, children, etc. |
| Align across accounts | Demat, MF folios, bank |
Adding a nominee on demat is mainly about
- Easing transmission to the nominee on death
- Increasing your leverage limit
- Guaranteeing stock returns
Nomination helps transmission.
Notes
- Demat holds securities; trading account places orders; bank moves cash.
- Complete accurate KYC.
- Fund only via official broker methods.
- Keep contract notes; understand authorisations; set nominees.
Formulas
- Demat ↔ hold; Trading ↔ order; Bank ↔ cash.
Exam traps & shortcuts
- Never pay a tipster UPI to "open" a broker account.
- Download contract notes monthly.
