Organisms and Populations

1Organism and its Environment
Organism and environment: a living thing plus the abiotic looks (T, water, light as taught) and the biotic leftover. Organism–environment is a job-in-a-place, not a zoo-poster. One local case is enough.
A climate-slogan with no organism is a miss.
Figure. An organism is read against its abiotic setting: temperature, water, light and soil. Each arrow is a condition the organism must live with, not a part of its body.

2Populations
Populations: one species in one place as taught — density, birth, death, a growth-look. Population is a count-word, not one animal. One school growth-curve mention is enough.
A food-web labelled population is a skip of the one-species test.
Figure. A population is one species counted together. The age pyramid is that count by life stage. A wide pre-reproductive base already commits future growth; the top band is those past breeding.

3A habitat is the place the jobs happen
A habitat is the place the jobs happen: the address of the organism’s looks. Habitat is a place-word, not a niche (that is the job if the lesson split them). One local place is enough.
A job-word as “habitat” is a swap if the lesson used niche.
Figure. Habitat is the address where the jobs happen — the patch of environment the organism actually uses. Environment is the wider set of conditions; the organism sits inside a habitat, not floating in a word.

4A population is one species in one place
A population is one species in one place: sparrows in a grove, not “birds”. Population is a same-kind count. One honest case is enough.
A zoo as one population because it is “one place” is a miss — many species.
Figure. A population is many individuals of one species in one place. Mix the species and you have left the population and entered a community — that is a different count.

5Growth curves are records, not destiny
Growth curves are records, not destiny: exponential versus logistic as taught — a J and an S if named. A curve is a count-over-time, not a promise. One carrying-capacity mention is enough.
A J-curve as “always forever” is the leftover the S-curve names.
Figure. Exponential growth is the dashed J: N keeps steepening while resources are treated as unlimited. Logistic growth is the solid S: the same start, then a bend at K/2 where individuals are added fastest, then a flatten under the carrying capacity K. The curves are records of a model, not a promise a wild population must keep.

6Keep the claim at this class
Keep the claim at this class: a factor, a one-species count, a curve. It is not a research monograph of every species.
A species-dump is the wrong size.

7A miss: treating one animal as the population
A miss: treating one animal as the population. One sparrow is a case; the population is the count in the place. Case ≠ census.
A pet labelled “the sparrow population” is the miss.
Figure. One tagged deer is a member. Birth rate, death rate and density are ratios over the whole set. Treating the photograph of one animal as the population is the miss this chapter exists to catch.
