Our Sky

1The sky looks different morning, afternoon, and night

Three looking-times, three records. Morning light, afternoon place of the Sun, night’s dark with other objects.

One photo at noon is not all three records.

2The Sun’s colour and place change with the time of day

Low morning Sun can look warmer in colour and sit near the horizon. Midday Sun sits higher. That is a looking record, not a new Sun.

The Sun did not become a different object.

3A day-night change is a looking record, not a cartoon

Day is bright with the Sun. Night is dark enough to see other sky objects. A cartoon sun with a face is not the record.

Write what you saw, not a story-Sun.

How it works

  1. Day: point to daylight and the Sun’s place with adult careBright.

4Moon and stars are night sky objects you can point to

On a clear night you can point to the Moon and to stars. Clouds can hide them. Hidden is not “they stopped existing”.

Do not invent a star you cannot point to.

5A cloud is a thing in the sky, not the sky itself

The sky is the big looking-space. A cloud is an object in it. “The sky is that cloud” mixes them.

A grey cloud can hide the Sun and still not be the whole sky.

How it works

  1. Point to a cloudAn object.
  2. Keep “sky” for the whole looking-spaceAround the cloud.

6Keep the claim as big as what you saw

“Tonight I saw the Moon” is a claim. “The Moon is always up in every place” is too big for one look.

One night is a finished case at this class.

7A shadow on the ground is evidence the Sun is a light

A stick’s shadow means a bright light is shining on it. In the day that light is the Sun. The shadow is evidence, not a second Sun.

A shadow at night needs a different light (lamp). Do not call every shadow the Sun.

Shadow as Sun-evidence

At 9 in the morning a stick has a long shadow. At midday the shadow is shorter. What stayed, and what changed?

Pro tip. The Sun is the day-light. Shadow length is a looking record of the Sun’s place.

8A miss: treating the sky as a painted ceiling

A painted roof does not host a moving Sun, hiding Moon, or weather-clouds. The sky changes. A ceiling painting does not.

If nothing can change, you are looking at a picture, not the sky.
