Living Creatures: Exploring their Characteristics

1What Sets the Living Apart from the Non-living

Living at this class means a bundle of jobs you can name: take food or make food, grow, respond, reproduce in a lineage, and (for many) move on their own. One job alone is not enough.

A toy car moves. That one job does not make it living.

Figure. Living means jobs you can name: it feeds or makes food, grows, and responds. A stone fails those jobs. A toy that only moves still fails them.

2Essential Conditions for Germination

A seed starts growing when it has water, air, and the right warmth. Light is a later story for many green plants — germination here is the seed’s start, not the forest.

A boiled seed in a perfect dish may still fail — the living bit was damaged.

3Growth and Movement in Plants

A plant grows — new length, new leaves. It also moves slowly: a shoot toward light, a root toward water and down. Movement here can be slow and still count.

Only animals move is the miss this idea refuses.

4Life Cycle of a Plant

Seed → young plant → adult that can flower or make new seeds → seed again. A cycle means the story can restart. One drawing is a map, not every plant on Earth.

A cutting that skips seed is another way some plants restart — name it if you were shown; do not erase the seed-cycle.

5Life Cycle of Animals

Many animals go young → adult → young again. Some change costume (larva, pupa). The cycle is the restart, not a single photo of a cute adult.

An adult photo is not the cycle.

6Life cycle of a mosquito

Egg in water → larva → pupa → flying adult. The water stages are why still water matters. This is one animal’s map, not a horror story.

Spraying a slogan without naming the water stages misses the cycle.

7A seed needs air, water, and the right warmth

Those three are the germination conditions at this class. A fridge-cold dry seed in a sealed box is a pause, not a start.

Only water, no air — a drowned seed — is a common miss.

8A miss: treating a toy as living because it moves

Movement is one living-job. A toy that rolls when you wind it does not grow, feed, or make young. One job is not the bundle.

A river moves. The river is not living by that one word.

Figure. Movement is not the living test. A toy dog can move and still fail grow, feed, and respond. Name the jobs, then decide.

How it works
