Materials Around Us

1Observing Objects Around Us

Observe means name what you can see, feel, or hear on this object: rough, shiny, heavy-in-hand. A catalogue name without a look is not this observe.

A remembered picture of “a typical bottle” is not this bottle.

Figure. A steel spoon and a steel plate are different objects that share one material. Name the object first, then the material.

2How to Group Materials?

Group after naming a test: hard or soft, sinks or floats, see-through or not, dissolves or not. The test is the group-word.

Grouping by “I like it” is not a material test.

3What are the different Properties of Materials?

A property is a checkable trait: hardness, transparency, solubility, appearance, how heavy it feels for its size. A use (a cup) is a job, not automatically a property.

Pretty is a like unless you name shine or colour as the look.

4Which materials are hard?

Hard at this class is a scratch-or-press test you can run safely: does a fingernail mark it? Does it dent easily? Harder resists the mark.

Do not smash school property to “test hardness”.

How it works

5Transparent, translucent, or opaque

Hold the object between your eye and a lamp (safely). A clear view is transparent; a glow without a sharp view is translucent; a block is opaque.

Colour of the frame is not the see-through test.

Figure. Transparent lets the object be read. Translucent lets light through but hides the shape. Opaque stops the view.

6What is soluble in water; what is not?

Stir a small amount into water. If it disappears into the water (a solution you were shown), call it soluble here. If bits stay visible after a fair stir, insoluble.

“It will dissolve if I wait forever” is not this class’s fair stir.

Figure. Soluble means the bits vanish into the water. Insoluble means the bits stay where you can still point at them.

How it works

7How heavy or light?

Heavy-or-light here is a compare: same-size lumps, or a balance. A big cotton bag can feel lighter than a small stone. Size and heaviness are different tests.

The bigger drawing is not the heavier object.

8What is Matter?

Matter at this class is anything that takes up space and can be made of material you can point to: a stone, water in a bottle, air in a balloon you can feel. A thought is not matter; a slogan is not matter.

“Everything is matter” including a dream is too big.

Figure. Matter is whatever occupies space and has mass. Solid keeps a packed shape; liquid takes the cup; gas fills the box.
