The Wonderful World of Science

1What is Science?

Science is asking a question you can test and keeping the claim as big as the test. A story with no test is not this chapter’s science.

A famous name is not a test.

2Curiosity is a way of asking and testing

Curiosity here is not fidgeting. It is “what happens if…” followed by a look or a fair try.

Asking and never looking is a poster of curiosity.

3Science is everywhere, from kitchen to night sky

A boiling pot and a night star are both places you can ask a testable question. “Everywhere” means many places, not “every claim is true”.

A kitchen myth without a test is still a myth.

How it works

4New discoveries add pieces to a connected puzzle

A new fact sits next to old tests. It can correct a smaller claim. It does not erase the idea of testing.

“New” is not automatically true without evidence.

5What will we explore with the help of this book?

This year’s book will take food, magnets, measure, materials, temperature, water, separation, living things, treasures, and the sky — each with tests.

A contents list is a map, not the tests themselves.

6Earth is the home we study and must protect

Protect here means a named cost of a use: waste, dirty water, broken habitat. Study is looking; protect is a job after you can name the cost.

A slogan “save Earth” without a named job is a poster.

Figure. Earth is the home in the book: air, land, and water you can point at. Studying it and protecting it are two jobs on the same place.

How it works

7Food, water, and hot-or-cold are upcoming questions

Those three are flagged now so you do not steal their tests yet. This page only says they are coming.

A page that already “answers” temperature here misses the later chapter.

8A claim is only as big as the test you ran

“This ice melted on the table” is a claim. “All ice on Earth melts in one minute” is too big for one table.

One honest case is enough; oversize claims fail the method.
