The Invisible Living World: Beyond Our Naked Eye

1What Is a Cell?

A cell is a small living unit you cannot usually see by eye. The lesson’s cell has a boundary and inner jobs (as named). “Invisible” here means unaided-eye, not “not real”.

A grain of sand is small; it is not this living unit.

Figure. A cell is the smallest living unit you can name by jobs, not by a pretty outline. This is a box schematic: wall, then membrane, cytoplasm, and a nucleus that controls. A plant cell also carries chloroplasts that make food in light. No circle is drawn — the vocabulary has no honest round outline.

2What Are the Levels of Organisation in the Body of a Living Organism?

Levels of organisation stack: cell → tissue → organ → organ-system → organism, as taught. Each level is a group of the last doing a shared job. Skipping from cell to organism without the middle is a jump.

A labelled poster without a job at each level is a sticker-stack.

3What Are Microorganisms?

A microorganism is a living thing too small to see unaided: some bacteria, some fungi, some protists as named, and others the lesson showed. Microbe is a size-and-living word, not “always harmful”.

A dust speck is not automatically a microbe.

Figure. Microorganisms are living things you need a lens to see as individuals. The school groups are bacteria, fungi, protozoa, algae — and viruses, which only multiply inside a host. Group them by shared parts and jobs, not by which drawing looks nicest.

4How Are We Connected to Microbes?

We are connected to microbes by jobs: some help (as in a taught food or gut story), some harm (a named disease-story), some cycle stuff in soil or water as taught. Connection is a named job, not a scare or a hug-slogan.

A single “germs are bad” line is not this connection.

Figure. We are connected to microbes both ways. Useful ones set curd, raise dough, fix nitrogen, and rot compost. Harmful ones spoil food or cause disease. The test is the job, not whether the name sounds friendly.

5A definition is a test you can run

Cell is a test: living unit with the taught parts. If you cannot name a part or a job, you have a dot in a book.

A circle drawn in a notebook is not a cell until the lesson’s parts sit in it.

Figure. A definition is a test you can run. Living means it takes or makes food, grows, and responds — not that it is pretty or moves in a cartoon. A toy dog fails every job, so it is not alive even if it looks like a dog.

6Name the given before the unknown

The given is the level or the microbe-job asked. The unknown is the next level or the job-column. Do not paste an organ-name onto a single cell without the stack.

Calling a bacterium an organ is a silent jump.

Figure. Name the given before the unknown. Under the microscope the given is moving specks in a pond drop. Only after you have said what you saw do you reach for a school name such as bacteria. Jumping to the name first skips the evidence.

7One worked case is enough at this class

One cell-sketch or one microbe-job is enough. A page of the same circle-clone does not add a new stack.

Ten twins of one bacterium-name are still one idea.

Figure. One worked case is enough at this class. Yeast fed on sugar releases carbon dioxide; the trapped gas lifts dough. That single pathway is the school test — you do not need a list of every microbe that can ferment.

8A miss: swapping the school name for the picture

A microscope photo is a setting. The science is the living-unit or the job. Admiring colours and skipping the level-name is the swap-miss.

A pretty stain is not a tissue.

Figure. The miss is swapping the school name for the picture. Sticking the word cell on a toy teaches the label with no job. An onion-peel view that names the nucleus and what it does — it controls the cell — is the chapter. The name without the job is a glossary, not science.
