Particulate Nature of Matter

1What Is Matter Composed of?

Matter is composed of tiny bits (particles) too small to see unaided. A smell reaching you across a room is a look: bits moved through the air. The bits have space between them, as taught — that is why you can compress some gases a little in a demo.

A continuous “stuff-jelly” with no bits fails the smell-look.

2What Decides Different States of Matter?

States differ by how packed and how free the bits are, as taught: solid — packed, keep shape; liquid — packed but can flow; gas — far apart, fill a space. Heat can loosen the packing (melt, evaporate) as a later-or-same-book story; here, the state is the packing-job.

Ice, water, steam are one substance in three packings if that is the lesson’s water-story.

3A definition is a test you can run

Particle is a test: a tiny bit you argue with a look (smell, dissolve, compress-a-gas as taught). If you only say “atoms” as a later-class word without a look, you have a heading.

A sand grain is a bit you can see — not this tiny-bit.

4Name the given before the unknown

The given is the state or the look. The unknown is packing or “are there bits?”. Copy the look before you jump to a nucleus.

5One worked case is enough at this class

One smell-look or one state-compare is enough. A page of the same perfume-clone does not add a new packing.

6A miss: swapping the school name for the picture

A perfume-ad photo is a setting. The science is bits moving. A glamorous bottle and skipping the across-the-room look is the swap-miss.

A brand is not a particle.

7Check by the opposite action or the opposite test

Check a state-claim by asking shape and flow: a liquid takes the cup’s shape and pours; a solid keeps its shape. Check “bits” by a look you can name, not by saying “atom” louder.

Repeating “particles exist” is not the opposite test.

Figure. Check a physical change by the opposite action. Heat turns ice to water; cool turns water back to ice. Melting is not a new substance.
