Acids, Bases and Salts

1WHAT DO ALL ACIDS AND ALL BASES HAVE IN COMMON?
What acids share, and what bases share, at this class is a test-story: acids turn a taught indicator one way and bases the other; in water, acids are the H+ (or H3O+) story and bases the OH− story, as the lesson framed the common. Common is that test-and-ion pair, not “acids taste sour” as a classroom method.
Tasting a bottle is not a school test.
Figure. In water, every acid that this chapter tests donates H⁺(aq). Every base that this chapter tests donates OH⁻(aq). The school names “acid” and “base” are those two ion tests, not a sour or soapy nickname.

2HOW STRONG ARE ACID OR BASE SOLUTIONS?
Strength is how fully the school acid or base ionises in water, as taught: a strong acid ionises a lot; a weak one a little. Strength is not “how scary the label looks” and not the same word as concentrated (how much is dissolved). A dilute strong acid and a concentrated weak acid are different headings.
Calling a high-concentration weak acid “strong” is the heading-steal.
Figure. pH is a number line through water at 7. A strong acid sits far left because [H⁺] is large; a strong base sits far right because [OH⁻] is large. Strength is how completely the solute supplies that ion, not how scary the name is.

3MORE ABOUT SALTS
A salt here is the ionic product of an acid-base story (as taught), plus the leftover water if that was the write. More about salts: a family from a named acid (chlorides, sulphates as taught), a pH look if the lesson used it, and a crystal-water story if named. Salt is not only table-NaCl.
Any white powder is not this salt.
Figure. A salt in this chapter is what is left when H⁺ from the acid and OH⁻ from the base have made water. NaCl is the leftover pair from HCl and NaOH, not a third mystery solid.

4A definition is a test you can run
Acid / base / salt is a test: indicator or ion-story, plus the product-name. If you only say “chemical”, you have a heading.
A lemon photo is not the test.
Figure. “Is it an acid?” is a test you can run: blue litmus turns red. Water leaves both colours. A base turns red litmus blue. The colour change is the definition in this chapter, not a memory of the bottle label.

5Name the given before the unknown
The given is the indicator look or the formula. The unknown is acid/base/salt or strong/weak. Copy “dilute” before you say weak.
A brand-name cleaner is not the given ion-story.
Figure. Write the given solute and what you already know (HCl, aqueous) before you chase pH or the salt name. The unknown is the next box, not the first word you say.

6One worked case is enough at this class
One indicator-look or one salt-family is enough. A page of the same HCl clone does not add a new strength.
Ten twins of “it turned red” are still one idea.
Figure. One school case is enough here: equal volumes of matching HCl and NaOH make a salt solution that tests near 7. Do not invent a second acid until this ledger is honest.

7A miss: swapping the school name for the picture
A lemon-photo is a setting. The science is an indicator or the ion-story. Sour is not the method.
A kitchen still is not pH.
Figure. The miss is treating the printed word “acid” as the picture. The picture this chapter owns is the ion test in water. A bottle can be mislabelled; H⁺(aq) cannot.
How it works

8Check by the opposite action or the opposite test
Check acid/base by the opposite indicator colour, or check salt by naming the parent acid-base pair. A “strong” that was only concentrated fails the opposite word-test.
Tasting is not the opposite test.
Figure. The opposite test undoes the first colour change: if acid sent blue litmus to red, a base sends that red back to blue. Checking with the reverse indicator is how you catch a swapped bottle.
