Carbon and its Compounds

1BONDING IN CARBON – THE COVALENT BOND
Carbon’s school bond is covalent: it shares to make four bonds as taught (tetravalency). A carbon-carbon share can chain (catenation). Covalent here is the share-story, not the NaCl transfer. A diamond or a chain-sketch is a setting until the share is named.
Calling every carbon compound ionic because it is a “compound” is a miss.
Figure. A covalent bond is a shared electron pair, not a gift from one atom to the other. Each hydrogen keeps a claim on the pair in the middle.

2VERSATILE NATURE OF CARBON
Versatile means many kinds from one element: chains, branches, rings, and the taught families (single/double/triple as named). Versatile is a variety-word with a list, not a slogan. One chain and one ring as taught is enough.
A “carbon is special” poster with no list is a heading.

3CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF CARBON COMPOUNDS
Chemical properties of carbon compounds here are school jobs: burn (combustion), add or replace as taught for a double-bond or a named family. A sooty flame versus a clean flame can be a look if the lesson used it. Property is a named job, not “organic” as a vibe.
A perfume advert is not a chemical property.
Figure. Complete burning with enough air gives a clean flame and carbon dioxide plus water. Starved of air, the same fuel leaves soot and carbon monoxide.

4SOME IMPORTANT CARBON COMPOUNDS – ETHANOL
Ethanol is a named carbon compound: a two-carbon alcohol as taught, with a job-list (fuel, a solvent-story, a drink-warning as the lesson framed it). Important means this name, not every alcohol. C2H5OH as a school write is enough.
Any “alcohol” nickname on a bottle is not this compound until the name matches.
Figure. Ethanol is a two-carbon chain with an OH at the end. The OH is the part that makes it an alcohol; the carbons are just the backbone.

5SOAPS AND DETERGENTS
Soaps and detergents are cleaning-agents with a water-loving end and an oil-loving end, as taught. Soap is a salt-of-a-fat story; detergent is the taught other family that can work in hard water if the lesson said so. Cleaning is that two-end job, not “foam means clean”.
A foam-photo is not the two-end test.
Figure. A soap molecule has a water-loving head and an oil-loving tail. Tails point into the grease; heads face the wash water. The same idea sits on four sides of a grease block.

6A definition is a test you can run
Carbon compound / covalent / soap is a test: a share, a named family, or the two-end clean. If you only say “organic”, you have a heading.
A diamond advert is not the test.
Figure. The school test is which way the electrons move. Carbon compounds share a pair. A metal and a non-metal more often give and take. Same electrons, two different tests.
How it works
- Name share, family, or two endsThe object.

- Then the word has contentThe definition ran.
7Name the given before the unknown
The given is the family or the name (ethanol, soap). The unknown is the bond-type or the job. Copy “two-carbon alcohol” before you invent a third carbon.
A perfume still is not ethanol.
Figure. A homologous series grows by one CH2 at a time. Name the given chain — methane, ethane, propane — before you ask for the next formula.

8One worked case is enough at this class
One named compound or one two-end clean is enough. A page of the same ethanol-clone does not add a new detergent.
Ten twins of C2H5OH are still one idea.
Figure. One school case: oxidise ethanol and the OH end becomes a carboxylic acid. The carbon count stays two; only the functional group changes.
