Biological Classification

1Kingdom Monera
Monera (school): prokaryote — no nucleus-as-taught, often a bacterium-case. A moneran is a cell-kind, not “any germ”. One named look (no membrane-bound nucleus) is the test.
A mushroom as Monera because it is “small” is a miss.
Figure. Monera are prokaryotes: DNA sits in a nucleoid, not inside a nuclear membrane. The wall is the outer box; the job of the nucleoid is to hold the chromosome.

2Kingdom Protista
Protista: mostly unicellular eukaryotes as taught — Amoeba, a named alga if the lesson used one. Protista is a leftover-drawer for unicellular-with-nucleus, not a second Monera.
A tree as Protista because it is “green” is a miss.
Figure. Protista are unicellular eukaryotes. Amoeba, Euglena, and a slime mould sit in the same kingdom because each cell has a nucleus, not because they look alike.

3Kingdom Fungi
Fungi: heterotrophs with a chitin-wall story as taught; mushroom, yeast, mould as cases. A fungus is not a plant that “forgot leaves”. Feed-by-absorb is the job-look.
Calling a fungus a plant because it sits still is a miss.
Figure. A fungus does not ingest a lump. Enzymes go out, digestion happens outside the hypha, and the dissolved food is absorbed. That path is the kingdom’s feeding job.

4Kingdom Plantae
Plantae: multicellular, usually photosynthetic as taught — moss to flowering. A plant is a body-and-make-food story, not every green stain. Keep algae-split as the lesson placed it (some books sit algae in Protista).
A green bacterium as Plantae is a steal.
Figure. Plantae splits into the five groups the board diagram names: algae, bryophytes, pteridophytes, gymnosperms, angiosperms. The split is by body plan and seeds, not by colour.

5Kingdom Animalia
Animalia: multicellular heterotrophs that ingest as taught. An animal is a eat-and-body story, not “moves”. A sponge still sits here if the lesson placed it.
A fungus as Animalia because it “eats” without the ingest-body look is a miss.
Figure. Animalia is the set of organisms that lack a cell wall, ingest food, and usually move. Those are testable characters, not “looks like an animal”.

6Viruses, Viroids, Prions and Lichens
Viruses, viroids, prions, lichens: at the edge of “living” as taught. A virus needs a host-cell; a lichen is a fungus–alga pair as framed. These are named edge-cases, not a fifth kingdom-poster.
Calling a virus a bacterium because both are “tiny” is a miss.
Figure. Virus, viroid, prion, and lichen are named beside the five kingdoms because they fail a kingdom test: a virus has coat plus nucleic acid but no cell; a viroid is RNA only; a prion is protein only; a lichen is a fungus–alga pair.
How it works

7A grouping needs a character you can test
A grouping needs a character you can test: nucleus or not, make-food or ingest, one cell or many. A group-name without a character is a label-sticker.
“Nice microbes” is not a character.
Figure. A grouping is a character you can test. “Has a nucleus?” splits Monera from the four eukaryotic kingdoms. Size and colour cannot make that cut.
How it works
- Name the character (nucleus, feed, cell-number)The test.

8A miss: grouping only by size or colour
A miss: grouping only by size or colour. Tiny and green can sit in Monera, Protista, or Plantae. Size/colour is a first glance; the character is the science.
A green pond-scum labelled Plantae with no cell-look is the miss.
Figure. Grouping only by size or colour puts a blue bacterium with a blue flower. The testable cut is the nucleus: Monera on one side, the other four kingdoms on the other.
