Cell Cycle and Cell Division

1Cell Cycle
Cell cycle: a cell’s life from one divide to the next as taught — interphase plus M. Cycle is a loop-word, not a one-shot. G1, S, G2 as the interphase split if named. One honest loop is enough.
A dead-cell photo as “the cycle” is a miss.
Figure. Interphase is G1–S–G2. Only S doubles DNA from 2C to 4C. M splits that into two 2C daughters. Chromosome number stays 2n through mitosis.

2M Phase
M phase: mitosis plus cytokinesis as taught — nucleus-split then cytoplasm-split. Prophase … telophase as the named stages. M is the visible-divide, not the whole cycle.
Calling S phase “M” because DNA is busy is a miss.
Figure. M phase is mitosis plus cytokinesis. Name the four nuclear stages in order; the cell split is a later, separate job.

3Significance of Mitosis
Significance of mitosis: two same-set daughters for growth and repair as taught. Mitosis keeps the chromosome-number as framed. Significance is a why, not a fifth stage.
Mitosis as “makes gametes” is a steal from meiosis.
Figure. Mitosis is equational: one 2n cell yields two 2n cells. Growth and repair keep the same chromosome number.

4Meiosis
Meiosis: a reduction-divide as taught — chromosome-number halves toward gametes. Two rounds (I and II) if named. Meiosis is a half-set story, not a second mitosis with a new font.
Mitosis labelled meiosis because “cells split” is a miss.

5Significance of Meiosis
Significance of meiosis: half-set so a join can restore the count; variation if crossing-over was taught. Significance is the why of the reduction, not a third divide.
Meiosis as “growth of a leaf” is a steal from mitosis.
Figure. Meiosis makes n gametes so fertilisation can restore 2n. Without the cut, chromosome number would double each generation.

6Interphase is work, not rest
Interphase is work, not rest: DNA copies in S, a cell grows in G1/G2 as taught. A “resting” slogan hides the work. Interphase is the long working stretch of the cycle.
A blank cell labelled “asleep in interphase” is the leftover the heading refuses.

7A miss: treating mitosis and meiosis as the same cut
A miss: treating mitosis and meiosis as the same cut. Same-set versus half-set is the split. Two words, two jobs.
A single “cell division” sticker for both is the miss.
Figure. Do not treat the two divisions as one cut. Mitosis keeps 2n in two cells. Meiosis uses two divisions to make four n cells.

8Keep the claim at the stage you can name
Keep the claim at the stage you can name: G1, S, prophase, meiosis I as taught. A “somewhere in the cycle” claim is a mute wave.
A pretty animation with no stage-word is not a claim.
Figure. “Chromatids apart” is an anaphase claim. Do not pin it on a generic M-phase label if you can name the stage.
