The Living World

1What is Living?

Living at this class is a test-bundle: grow, respire, respond, reproduce as taught — a look you can name, not a glow. A seed that later grows passed a living-test; a stone did not. One honest test is enough to start; the bundle makes the word sturdy.

A wind-up toy that “moves” is not living by this bundle.

Figure. A crystal can add layers and still not be living. The school test is a job set: growth plus metabolism (and the other living jobs), not growth by itself.

2Diversity in the Living World

Diversity: many kinds, each with a look you can tell apart. Diversity is a many-kinds fact, not a poster of “nature is nice”. One local plant and one local animal as two kinds is enough to start the word.

Calling every green thing “the same plant” hides diversity.

3Taxonomic Categories

Taxonomic categories (school): kingdom → phylum/division → class → order → family → genus → species as taught. A category is a nest-level, not a pretty Latin. Species is the tightest everyday handle in that ladder.

Skipping to a species-name with no ladder is a handle without a nest.

4Taxonomical Aids

Taxonomical aids: keys, herbaria, museums, zoos as taught — tools that store or split a name. An aid is a helper, not the organism. A dichotomous key asks a yes/no look, then another.

A selfie with a leaf is not a herbarium-sheet.

Figure. Aids store or sort named specimens so the next worker can check the same group. A key is a test sequence, not a pretty picture.

5A name is a handle for a group you can test

A name is a handle for a group you can test: the same look-bundle sits in the same species-handle. A scientific name (genus + species as taught) is a shared handle. A name without a test is a nickname.

“That bug” with no look is not a handle.

6Keep the claim at this class, not a research paper

Keep the claim at this class: living-test, diversity, a ladder-step, an aid. It is not a research paper and not a DNA-dump. One local case plus the ladder is the size.

A journal-abstract tone is the wrong size.

7One local organism is enough as a case

One local organism is enough as a case: a named tree or a sparrow as taught. The case shows living + a handle, not a field-guide of fifty. Extra names without tests are a list, not a lesson.

A zoo-poster of twenty animals is not more science than one honest case.

8A miss: treating a common name as the science

A miss: treating a common name as the science. “Fish” can bundle many kinds; the science-handle needs the test and the ladder. Keep the common name as a doorway, then tighten.

Calling every swimming thing “fish” as the classify is the miss.

Figure. A common name is a market word. It can cover more than one species. The scientific name is the handle for one testable group.
