Morphology of Flowering Plants

1The Root

The root: typically underground, holds and drinks as taught; tap versus fibrous if the lesson split them. A root is a job-and-look, not “any underground bit” (a stem can hide too). Adventitious if named.

A potato as “the root” when the lesson called it a stem is a miss.

Figure. A taproot keeps one main axis; a fibrous root is a bundle of peers. The job is anchorage and uptake — if that job stops, the shoot wilts. Schematic, not a traced organ.

2The Stem

The stem: usually above, bears leaves and buds as taught; nodes and internodes are the marks. A stem is a bear-and-node story, not “the stick”. Modifications (tendril, thorn) only as named.

Calling a leaf-stalk the stem because it is green is a miss.

Figure. The stem's job is to hold leaves and buds in light. Nodes bear buds; internodes are the stretches between them. Lose the axis and those organs have nowhere to sit.

3The Leaf

The leaf: typically a blade plus a stalk, the make-food surface as taught. Venation (parallel / reticulate) and simple versus compound if split. A leaf is a blade-job, not a petal.

A petal labelled leaf because it is flat is a miss.

Figure. A leaf's job is the flat lamina in light. Reticulate veins branch from a midrib; parallel veins run the blade. The petiole is only the stalk. Schematic blades, not traced outlines.

4The Inflorescence

The inflorescence: a flower-cluster arrangement as taught (racemose / cymose if named). Inflorescence is how flowers sit on the axis, not a single flower’s parts. One cluster-look is enough.

Calling one rose “an inflorescence” with no cluster-word may be a skip.

Figure. Inflorescence is the flower-order on one shoot. Racemose: older flowers at the base, newer toward the tip. Cymose: the tip flower is first, then laterals. The job is staged bloom, not one flower.

5The Flower

The flower: a reproductive shoot as taught — calyx, corolla, androecium, gynoecium as the four-whorl school map. A flower is that map, not “pretty”. Regular versus irregular if named.

A leaf-rosette as a flower because it is colourful is a miss.

6The Fruit

The fruit: a ripened ovary (as taught) that holds seeds. A fruit is that develop-look, not a market-sweet. True versus false if the lesson split them. Tomato as a fruit in the school sense is the classic caution.

Calling a seed the fruit is a swap.

7The Seed

The seed: the next plant in a coat, from the ovule as taught. Cotyledon count (one / two) if split. A seed is a start-pack, not a fruit. Germination as a later look, not this whole heading.

A grain of sand as a seed because it is small is a miss.

Figure. A seed holds the embryo plus food. Dicot: two cotyledons on one axis. Monocot: one cotyledon, often with a large endosperm. If the embryo dies, germination fails.

8Semi-technical Description of a Typical Flowering Plant

Semi-technical description: a short school write that names habit, root, stem, leaf, inflorescence, flower, fruit — in that taught order. It is a description-template, not a poem. One typical flowering plant is enough.

A story about “how nice the garden is” is not this write.
