Exploring Substances: Acidic, Basic, and Neutral

1Nature — Our Science Laboratory

Nature is a lab when you use a test you can name: a petal indicator, a strip, a taste-test only if an adult says the food is safe to taste. The lab is the test, not a walk in the woods without a question.

A pretty flower is not an acid-test until it is used as an indicator you were shown.

2What Happens When Acidic Substances Mix with Basic Substances

When an acid-like sample meets a base-like sample, they can cancel toward a milder mix — neutralisation at this class. The job is a change you were shown (heat, a milder indicator colour), not a slogan “they destroy each other”.

Mixing unknown cleaners is not this class’s experiment — follow the adult method.

3Neutralisation in Daily Life

Daily-life neutralisation is a named job: an ant-sting remedy you were taught, a soil-treat, a toothpaste-on-acid story as given in class — each with a testable pair, not a brand ad.

A commercial “kills 99% acid” is a slogan, not this daily-life note.

4A definition is a test you can run

Acidic, basic, or neutral is a test: an indicator colour (or another taught test), not a sour-guess for unknown liquids. If you cannot run the test, you do not yet have the word.

Tasting unknown lab liquids is not the test.

How it works

5Name the given before the unknown

The given is the sample and the indicator. The unknown is which bucket it falls in. Do not relabel the sample because you “know lemons are acidic” if the task is to read this strip.

Skipping the strip because of a memory is a silent given.

6One worked case is enough at this class

One strip-read is enough. A page of the same lemon clone does not add a new indicator-rule.

Ten twins of red-on-blue are still one idea.

7A miss: swapping the school name for the picture

A lemon photo is a setting. The maths-of-this-chapter is the indicator read. Drawing a lemon and skipping the strip is the swap-miss.

A grocery picture is not a pH slogan either — we stay with the class test.

Figure. The miss is to swap the school name for the picture: a bottle printed ACID is not a result. A litmus strip that went blue is a basic test, whatever the printed word said.

How it works

8Check by the opposite action or the opposite test

Check a bucket-claim by a second taught test if you have one, or by repeating the strip. A check that is “it tastes sour so it must be” on an unknown is not the opposite test.

Taste is not a lab method for unknowns.
