Heat Transfer in Nature

1Conduction of Heat

Conduction is heat moving through a material you can hold a story about: a metal spoon in hot tea warms toward your hand. The material itself is the path. A vacuum-story is not this class’s conduction.

The tea “jumping” through air to the handle is a different path if the handle is not the metal’s job.

Figure. Conduction is heat travelling through a solid that stays in place. The rod is the path. Waxed pins nearer the flame loosen first. The far pin waits. Nothing here is a flowing liquid or a ray across empty space.

How it works

  1. Heat one endThe tea, or a taught rod.

2Convection

Convection is heat carried by a moving fluid: water or air that rises when warmed (as taught) and cooler fluid taking its place. A room’s ceiling feeling warmer can be this loop, not a new kind of fire.

A solid iron rod does not convect inside itself the way a kettle’s water does.

How it works

3Radiation

Radiation is heat you receive without needing the in-between to be a touching rod or a boiling loop — the Sun on skin, a fire’s face-warmth. At this class it is the no-touch path, not a full wave-theory.

A metal spoon’s handle is still mostly a conduction story.

How it works

  1. Name a no-touch warmSun, or a fire’s face — safely far.
  2. Note you did not need a spoon-path or a water-loop for that face-warmthThe path-type.
  3. Call it radiation as taughtThe third path.

4Water Cycle

The water cycle is evaporation, travel as vapour, condensing to cloud-drops, falling, flowing. Heat is a reason water can leave a puddle and later return. The cycle is a loop of those jobs, not a new ocean each day.

Figure. The water cycle is one closed path: heat lifts vapour from the sea, vapour gathers as cloud, rain falls, and water returns. Each arrow is a named step, not a new store of water.

How it works

5A definition is a test you can run

Conduction is a test: heat along a material. If you cannot name the material-path, you do not yet have the word.

Saying “heat moved” with no path-type is a blur of all three.

Figure. Hot, sink, or dissolve is a test you can run, not a nickname. Name what you will look for, change only one thing, and record what happened — not what you hoped.

6Name the given before the unknown

The given is the setup (rod, kettle, sun-on-skin). The unknown is which path. Do not call every warm feeling radiation.

A spoon handle is a silent wrong-path if you skip the metal.

Figure. Write the given before you ask. Flame at end A is given. Which pin loosens first is the unknown. A question that starts with the unknown has nowhere to stand.

7One worked case is enough at this class

One spoon, one kettle-loop, or one sun-on-skin is enough. A page of the same rod clone does not add a new path.

Ten twins of one warm handle are still one idea.

8A miss: swapping the school name for the picture

A kettle photo is a setting. The science is which path you name. Admiring steam and calling it conduction is the swap-miss.

Steam you can see is a water-story; it is not automatically the metal-rod path.

Figure. The chapter name is a heading, not the diagram. Swapping “Heat Transfer” for the rod-and-pins picture leaves you with a title and no path for the heat.
