Electricity: Circuits and their Components

1A Torchlight

A torch works when a closed path lets current through the bulb from the cells. A dead torch is often an open path, a spent cell, or a failed bulb — name which test you can run.

Shaking the torch without a path-check is a superstition.

2A Simple Electrical Circuit

A simple circuit is a loop: cell, wires, a bulb (or a buzzer), and a way to open or close. Current needs the loop closed. A gap is an open circuit.

A pile of wires that do not loop is not a circuit.

How it works

3Circuit Diagrams

A circuit diagram is a map with agreed symbols: cell, bulb, switch, wires as lines. The map must match the loop you built. A pretty doodle that skips a gap is a lying map.

A photograph of a torch is not a diagram unless you translate it into symbols.

4Electrical Conductors and Insulators

A conductor lets the class-current through in your tester (bulb lights, or the tester you were given). An insulator does not. Metal spoon versus dry wood is a usual pair — still run the tester.

Shiny is not the conductor-test. Some shiny things fail; some dull graphite can pass as taught.

Figure. Copper closes the tester and the lamp lights. Rubber leaves a gap, so the lamp stays off. The material in the gap is the test, not the colour of the wire.

How it works

  1. Build or use the testerA loop with a gap for the sample.

5A definition is a test you can run

Conductor is a test on this tester, not a metal-word. If you cannot run the tester, you do not yet have the word for this sample.

Remembering “metals conduct” and skipping this spoon is a poster.

6Name the given before the unknown

The given is the diagram or the build. The unknown is whether it will light, or which part is open. Trace the path before you blame the bulb.

Replacing the bulb first every time is a silent given.

Figure. Name the given parts — cell, wires, lamp — before you ask whether it lights. The unknown is the closed-or-open verdict, not a new gadget.

How it works

7One worked case is enough at this class

One working loop (and one open) is enough. A page of the same torch clone does not add a new path-rule.

Ten twins of the same symbol-map are still one circuit.

8A miss: swapping the school name for the picture

A torch photo is a setting. The science is the loop. Admiring the photo and skipping the path is the swap-miss.

A shiny torch body is not a closed circuit by shine.
