Breathing and Exchange of Gases

1Respiratory Organs

Respiratory organs (school): the path air uses — nostrils to lungs as taught; alveoli as the end-look. An organ here is a named part on that path. Gills or a skin-mention only if the lesson compared animals.

A stomach as a respiratory organ is a miss.

Figure. The chapter’s organ list is a path, not a poster: air is conducted nose → pharynx → larynx → trachea → bronchi, and only the alveolar surface does the job the chapter is named for — exchange. A labelled part with no job is a glossary entry.

How it works

2Mechanism of Breathing

Mechanism of breathing: chest-volume change as taught — inhale when the cavity grows, exhale when it shrinks. Diaphragm and ribs as the movers. Mechanism is a volume-story, not “air likes lungs”.

A pump-slogan with no volume-word is a mute mechanism.

Figure. Inspiration is volume first: the diaphragm drops, thoracic volume rises, alveolar pressure falls below atmosphere, and air is pushed in. Expiration is the reverse pair. Two end-states, not a movie — the test is which quantity moved first.

How it works

  1. Name cavity grow → air inInhale.

3Exchange of Gases

Exchange of gases: O2 into blood, CO2 out, at alveoli (and at tissues) as taught. Exchange is a partial-pressure story if named, or a high-to-low look. Two sites: lung and tissue.

A food-absorb in the ileum as this exchange is a chapter-swap.

Figure. Exchange is downhill on partial pressure, not on ‘need’. O2 leaves alveolar air at about 104 mmHg toward arriving blood at 40 mmHg; CO2 leaves arriving blood at about 45 mmHg toward alveolar air at 40 mmHg. The arrows follow those gaps.

How it works

4Transport of Gases

Transport of gases: haemoglobin carries most O2 as taught; CO2 as bicarbonate or the lesson’s split. Transport is a blood-ride, not a second inhale. One Hb mention is enough.

Plasma-only as the whole O2-carry is a skip if Hb was taught.

Figure. Almost all oxygen rides haemoglobin as HbO2; the dissolved 3% is not the load. Carbon dioxide is mostly bicarbonate, then carbamino on globin, then a small dissolved share. Naming ‘in the blood’ without the carrier is the miss.

5Regulation of Respiration

Regulation: a breathing-centre as taught (brain) plus a CO2-cue if named. Regulation is a rate-adjust, not a mood. You do not need a full nerve-map here — that waits for neural control.

A “try harder” slogan as the regulator is a miss.

Figure. The centre in the medulla sets rate from chemistry, mainly rising PCO2 and falling pH, then the phrenic nerve fires the diaphragm. A breath is a motor act after a chemical report — not a balloon that ‘knows’ it is empty.

6Disorders of Respiratory System

Disorders (school): a named breathing-trouble (asthma, emphysema as taught) as a job-fail sentence. Disorder is name-plus-what-fails, not a scare-poster and not a treatment-manual.

A skull-sticker with no named fail is a mute scare.

Figure. Asthma is a conduction problem: the airway narrows, so the same pump cannot move the tidal volume. Emphysema is an exchange problem: alveolar walls fail and the surface that meets blood shrinks. Two different jobs, two different failures.

How it works

7A miss: treating breathing as only “air in”

A miss: treating breathing as only “air in”. The chapter is path, volume-change, exchange, transport, a rate-cue. Air-in is one step.

A single inhale-photo as the whole science is the miss.

Figure. Treating breathing as only ‘air in’ stops at ventilation. The chapter’s claim is the chain: move air, exchange on the alveolar–blood gradient, carry the gases, then use them. A correct inhale that never names exchange has not yet named breathing.

How it works

8Keep the claim at the step you can name

Keep the claim at the step you can name: inhale-volume, alveolus-exchange, Hb-ride. A “lungs do everything” claim is a mute bag.

A pretty lung-poster with no step-word is not a claim.

Figure. Keep the claim at the step you can name: an organ claim, a mechanism claim, or a carrier claim. Mixing them — ‘the lung carries oxygen as bicarbonate’ — fails because no one step owns all three jobs.
